WWDC 2012: Apple's Siri will know movies, sports, work in a car

This post has been corrected, see below.

Starting in the fall, new iPhones and iPads will have a higher-IQ version of Apple's robot assistant, Siri.?

A common complaint has been that the artificially semi-intelligent app is no good at finding movie showtimes, so when you ask Siri when and where?"Prometheus"?is playing, she just gets confused.

No more, apparently. Soon users will be able to interrogate the app about movies are playing at neighborhood cineplexes, and she'll pop up a list of titles along with ratings from Rotten Tomatoes.? Or if you like specific actors, you can command Siri to tell you about movies starring Channing Tatum or Selena Gomez, and she will have no choice but to comply.

For the more sports-inclined, Siri also has a baseball-card-type simulator, where it will pop up stats for Kobe Bryant or Tiger Woods, or tell you who won last night's Kings game.

You'll also be able to use Siri to Tweet or update your Facebook status ? she's clearly very into? social media.

And if you want to ask your iPhone these questions while you're in the car, a bunch of auto companies are going to build in a steering-wheel button that will let you talk to your phone on the road.? Apple showed logos for BMW, General Motors, Mercedes, Land Rover, Audi, Jaguar, Infiniti, Chrysler and Honda. Of course, you'll still have to look at the little screen to see what she fetches for you, but it's better than having to (illegally, dangerously, immorally) type while driving.

The in-car Siri feature is going to be called "Eyes Free."? Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said the new version of Apple's mobile software, iOS 6, will be available in the fall ? but only the iPhone 4S and the new iPad will include Siri ? and whatever new phones we see later this year.

Corrected: An earlier version of this post misspelled the name of automaker Infiniti as Infinity, and incorrectly stated that one of the car logos was that of Plymouth, a now-defunct auto brand once produced by Chrysler, the correct owner of the logo.
