Survey Says - Business Networking With Dr. Ivan Misner

What have my Business Networking and Sex co-authors and I concluded after 12,000 individual surveys, almost 1,000 comments and stories, numerous interviews, months of research, and years of experience?? Below is a recap of the facts we uncovered.

Study Findings, Summarized

  • Men and women were closer together than we expected in most areas.
  • However, the perception of the difference is very dramatic.? Remember: The exception becomes the perception.
  • Women feel that networking has played a slightly larger role in their success than men.
  • Women use a much wider variety of techniques to learn their networking skills than men do.
  • Men are more likely to focus on business first than women are.? Women are a little more likely to focus on building the relationship first?then the business.
  • The time of day for networking was not a big issue for either gender.? This was a surprise to us.
  • Family obligations were more of a problem for women.
  • Women definitely did not feel as safe as men in attending evening events.
  • Men preferred either a structured or unstructured networking event.? Women felt okay with either.
  • Both men and women felt that other people were more uncomfortable networking than they felt about it themselves.
  • Men felt stronger about transactional aspects of networking.? Women felt stronger about relational aspects of networking.
  • Men spent a little more time networking.
  • Women received a higher percentage of their business from networking than men.
  • The more time either men or women spent in their networking efforts, the higher the percentage of business they generated.
  • The more often people used systems to track their business from networking, the more likely they were to feel that networking played a role in their success.

Men and women are not so different in the success they desire in business and networking.? However, the process, the mindset, and the way of making the results happen are very different.? The reason is that we have different ways of viewing the world.? Some of this comes from nature and some from nurture.? What it means is that if we want to be more effective, we must learn how to respect, appreciate, and embrace one another?s differences.? We must understand that we can work more effectively together as a team in business and in our networks.? We just need to learn to be adaptable, empathetic, sensitive, and understanding that THEY are not you.

You can and will beat the odds.? The exception doesn?t have to become the perception.? It can be you!?

Come back next week for some advice from the whole team of Business Networking and Sex co-authors?these tips will help you achieve your highest potential when it comes to networking and guide you into your brightest future in referral marketing.

Italy beats England in shootout

Italians advance to take on Germany in Euro 2012 semifinal

Italy's Alessandro Diamanti, left, and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, second left, celebrate with teammates after winning the penalty shootout against England on Sunday.

KIEV, Ukraine - After two hours of clever, often dominating but in the end fruitless play, Italy found the answer against England.

Penalty kicks.

Alessandro Diamanti scored the decisive kick Sunday to send Italy through to the European Championship semifinals with a 4-2 win in the shootout following a 0-0 tie with England.

Italy will next play Germany in the semifinals on Thursday in Warsaw, Poland. Defending champion Spain plays Portugal on Wednesday in Donetsk, Ukraine.

"We deserved this victory," Diamanti said. "The penalties rewarded our dominance during the match. It's only fair, we played a great match and battled from the first to the last minute."

But not until penalties by Mario Balotelli, Andrea Pirlo - with an audacious slow chip-shot down the middle of the goal - and Antonio Nocerino did the Azzurri find the net. Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney scored England's penalties.

The difference: Ashley Young hit the crossbar with England's third, and Ashley Cole's attempt was saved by Gianluigi Buffon.

For England, it was yet another exit from a major tournament in the quarterfinals after a penalty shootout. England lost to Portugal in the same manner at Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.

"It's obviously a hard way to go out," England striker Wayne Rooney said. "And it's maybe happened too many times now."

England briefly led the shootout after Riccardo Montolivo missed Italy's second penalty. His shot went wide of Joe Hart's right post as the England goalkeeper guessed correctly.

Rooney then sent Buffon the wrong way, firing in his spot kick to the keeper's right to give England a 2-1 lead.

The momentum shifted after Pirlo's bold piece of skill leveled it 2-2.

"I just saw that the goalkeeper was moving a bit earlier so I decided to play it the other way," Pirlo said. "It just comes to you at that moment and it went well."

Not for England.

"We have done the country proud, but again we go home with heartbreak and it's difficult to take," said Gerrard, who played in both those previous shootout losses.

The match ended 0-0 after 120 minutes of play. The Italians twice hit the post, but were also let down by poor composure in front of the net. Diamanti clipped the post with a curling cross in the 101st minute, and swept a shot wide in the clearest chance of the second period of extra time.

Nocerino, another substitute, thought he had scored from Diamanti's cross in the 115th but was offside.

Daniele De Rossi hit the post in the third minute, and Buffon saved a shot from Glen Johnson in the fifth.

The first scoreless match at Euro 2012 was neither dull nor lacking good soccer.

Italy's attacking desire and creativity under coach Cesare Prandelli had playmaker Pirlo at its heart. Italy had 35 shots, compared to only nine for England.

An intriguing match almost demanded that Balotelli take center stage. The Italy forward ran clear in the 25th, but hesitated and allowed John Terry to block his chipped shot.

Balotelli forced Hart, his teammate at Manchester City, to save an acrobatic shot, then surged between England's central defenders before putting a half-volley over the crossbar. He kicked the goal post in frustration.

Italy continued surging in the second half and De Rossi, taking a ball over his shoulder, scuffed his shot wide. De Rossi sank to his knees in obvious exasperation, and more Italian frustration quickly followed.

Three rapid-fire chances in the 52nd saw Hart beat away De Rossi's long-range shot, block Balotelli's follow-up and watch Montolivo lash the loose ball high.

England coach Roy Hodgson had to react to Italy's dominance, and sent on substitutes Andy Carroll and Theo Walcott, who both scored in a 3-2 win over Sweden.

Carroll's muscular presence created a shooting chance for Young, but England still failed to convince. Rooney made little impression after an early diving header.

De Rossi was replaced by Nocerino and the substitute threatened in the 89th. He took another crafty pass from Pirlo on the run, but Johnson tracked back to block.

Deep into injury time, Italian defensive jitters created a chance for Rooney but his overhead kick sailed high.

Then it was on to penalties. And Diamante's heroics.

"Getting to this point is a huge satisfaction," Diamanti said. "I always believed I would, even when I played in the inter-regional division - I just never told anyone, because they would have thought I was crazy."

Cyprus becomes 5th eurozone state to seek bailout

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) ? Cyprus on Monday became the fifth eurozone country to request financial aid from its partners in the troubled European currency union as it struggles to shore up banks that took heavy losses on Greek debt.

The island nation's government said in a terse statement that it required assistance following "negative spillover effects through its financial sector, due to its large exposure in the Greek economy."

Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou wouldn't say how much Cyprus would ask for from the European bailout fund, saying the amount will be subject to negotiations in the coming days. The 27 leaders of the European Union are meeting in Brussels on Thursday and Friday.

Analysts estimate the sum would likely be around ?5 billion ($6.2 billion) but could go as high as ?10 billion ($12.5 billion) That's a fraction of the bailouts given to the other EU countries ? Spain has asked for as much as ?100 billion ($125 billion)for its banks.

Cyprus, an island in the eastern Mediterranean of about a million people, joined the European Union in 2004 and began using the euro four years later.

Cyprus needs about ?1.8 billion ($2.3 billion) ? about 10 percent of its gross domestic product ? by a June 30 deadline to recapitalize its second largest lender, Cyprus Popular Bank. The bank is the most heavily exposed of the country's banks to Greek government debt, which lost most of its value this year in a massive write-down.

Over the past weeks it has become clear that Cyprus Popular Bank would not find the money from the private sector and would need to get it from the government ? but the government itself is strapped for cash and has been unable to raise money in bond markets, where its borrowing rates are too high. The government has been getting by lately on a loan from Russia, but that will run out by the end of the year.

Stefanou said despite its request for European aid, the Cypriot government would continue negotiations for another possible loan from a country outside the EU, such as Russia or China.

"One doesn't preclude the other," Stefanou told The Associated Press. "Our efforts to secure a bilateral loan will continue."

Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly confirmed to the AP that the country would still search for an outside loan even as it negotiates the size of its EU loan. The Cypriot government has been apprehensive about turning solely to the EU bailout fund because it has seen the tough spending cuts and tax increases that Greece had to enact in exchange for bailout money.

The Cypriot economy has thrived on foreign businesses setting up shop due to its low 10 percent corporate tax rate, which the government is keen to protect.

Greece, Ireland and Portugal, which have needed European bailouts to finance their government debt, are on strict austerity plans. Spain, which has asked for money to rescue its banks, is still negotiating the terms of its aid deal.

"Given the current state of the Cypriot economy, turning to the EU for a bailout was the only option," said financial analyst Michalis Florentiades. "But even if the Cypriot government does secure a bilateral loan, it's uncertain whether this would soften the terms that come with the EU bailout."

A recent European Commission report said the island is "experiencing very serious macroeconomic imbalances that need to be urgently addressed" and proposed slashing spending on the island's bloated public sector and making pension reforms.

Earlier Monday, Fitch became the third ratings agency to downgrade Cyprus' credit rating to junk status, estimating that the island will need another ?4 billion ($5 billion) to recapitalize its banking sector. It cited the banks' exposure to Greek debt as well as a rise in bad loans over the last year as the Cypriot economy has shrunk while unemployment has hit a record high of 10 percent.

Fitch predicts that Cyprus' government debt will shoot above 100 percent of its GDP, more than 12 points more than its previous estimate. The agency also expected the government to miss its goal of bringing the budget deficit below 3 percent of GDP through another round of spending cuts and tax increases by as much as a percentage point.

Cypriot banks could suffer further losses if Greece decides it must leave the 17-nation eurozone, since they also hold an estimated ?22 billion ($27.5 billion) in Greek business and household loans.

Compounding the island's banking troubles are projections that its economy will shrink by 1 percent of GDP this year.

Cyprus was split in 1974 when Turkey invaded after a coup by supporters of union with Greece. Only it's southern, internationally recognized Greek-speaking part enjoys EU membership. A breakaway Turkish Cypriot state in the north of the island is recognized only by Turkey, which maintains 35,000 troops there.

AllAboutSuccess.Com Self improvement and success go hand in ...

How do you know if a person is willing to attain self improvement? This is a question with no definite answer. It will all depend on the individual. Many people have goals, dreams or ambitions but do not know how to go about achieving them. They may have thought about what would make up self improvement and their ideal life, but have no idea how to even begin to make the plans and take the actions required to make them a reality. Some people have a vague idea on how to go about self improvement. These are the ones that believe that if only they had a better job, or had been given better opportunities, or met the love of their life, or whatever else, everything would be fine and they would be happy. They feel that their happiness or lack of happiness is decided by external factors and their thoughts and actions are of little consequence. Some believe that if only they had more money they could have whatever they want and be on their way to self improvement. They may have spent little time thinking about what they actually want from life, and do not really believe there is anything they can do to create their fuzzy version of utopia anyway, apart from buying more lottery tickets.Other people do not even know what they actually want from their lives and may even have little idea what would really makes them happy. They seem to just drift from day to day, week to week, month to month, and year to year, and do little more than just about get by. They may have seemingly secure jobs and be earning enough to live relatively comfortable lives. They seem happy enough and have no great ambition to achieve anything more from their lives than they currently have.Is self improvement important? The reality is that throughout our lives we are all constantly growing and developing. Circumstances make us grow and develop, even if we do not make the conscious decision to do so. Up to a certain age, we learn through formal education and we continue to learn through our experiences for the rest of our lives. We have to learn and grow to deal with everything that life throws at us. We all have to go through self improvement.Modern life moves at a dramatically faster pace than at anytime in history. For anyone living in modern society there are more opportunities to do anything that you want to do with your life than ever before. California tobacco tax hike narrowly defeated...

SACRAMENTO | Fri Jun 22, 2012 6:01pm EDT

SACRAMENTO (Reuters) - California will not raise cigarette taxes by $1 a pack after vote results posted on Friday showed a ballot initiative on the matter narrowly failed, and proponents of the tax on tobacco products conceded defeat.

The measure, known as Proposition 29, was defeated 50.3 percent to 49.7 percent, according to full precinct count results posted on Friday by California's Secretary of State. Some absentee and other ballots remained to be counted.

"While the final numbers are not yet in, it appears that California's Prop 29 will be defeated," proponents of the measure said in a statement. "We are sorely disappointed that, yet again, Big Tobacco placed its profits ahead of the health of California and the nation."

The initiative would have raised the tax on cigarette packs by $1 and added an equivalent tax increase on other tobacco products, with the extra tax revenue dedicated to research on cancer and other tobacco-related illnesses.

With the no vote, California's cigarette tax remains at 87 cents per pack. That tax revenue already goes toward various tobacco prevention and cessation programs, according to the state.

A coalition of groups including the American Cancer Society and cycling great and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong were prominent supporters of the initiative, but opponents led by Altria's Philip Morris and Reynolds American Inc vastly outspent their rivals, blanketing airwaves in much of the state with a message that cast doubt on how the tax revenues would be spent.

"The defeat of this life-saving initiative is a genuine tragedy. Big Tobacco lied to voters to protect its profits and spent $50 million to ensure it can continue peddling its deadly products to California kids," Doug Ulman, President and CEO of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, said in a statement on Friday.

Just under 28,000 votes separated the more than 5 million ballots cast in the June 5 election.

Turkey has admitted that one of its fighter jets may have violated Syrian airspace after Damascus confirmed that its forces shot the plane down over the Mediterranean. International figures called for calm as fears grew that the downing of a military aircraft belonging to a Nato member state could have an incendiary effect on the already strained relations between the two countries. Guido Westerwelle, Germany?s Foreign Minister, said he was ?greatly worried? by the incident. ?Everything must be done to ensure that there won?t be any further escalation in the already tense region,? he said. In Baghdad, Hoshyar Zebari, the Foreign Minister, said: ?Our main concern is the spillover of the crisis into neighbouring countries. If this conflict were to turn into all-out sectarian or civil war, Iraq would be affected, Lebanon would be affected, Jordan would not be immune, Turkey could be (affected).? As the Syrian and Turkish navies mounted a joint search operation for the two missing pilots, the government in Ankara called its second emergency meeting of military top brass, senior intelligence officials and ministers since the plane was shot down yesterday. ?It is not possible to cover over a thing like this. Whatever is necessary will no doubt be done,? the Turkish President, Abdullah G?l, said. It did not happen in the widely anticipated manner, though, and many in the sell-out crowd thought she was beaten after a calamitous misjudgment by her jockey, Luke Nolen. Having dictated the race from halfway without ever settling it emphatically, Nolen dropped his hands near the line. Briefly, it seemed the French-trained sprinter, Moonlight Cloud, had overhauled the 6-1 on favourite but, to a cacophony of shrieks and groans from the stand, Nolen desperately conjured a rally to snatch the prize by a head. This was Black Caviar?s first race outside Australia, an immensely sporting decision by her eight owners, and it would have been a cause for regret throughout the spor

(AP) ? Jerry Sandusky was convicted Friday of sexually assaulting 10 boys over 15 years, accusations that shattered the Happy Valley image of Penn State football and led to the firing of Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno.

Sandusky, a 68-year-old retired defensive coach who was once Paterno's heir apparent, was found guilty of 45 of 48 counts.

Sandusky showed little emotion as the verdict was read. The judge ordered him to be taken to the county jail to await sentencing in about three months. Many of the charges carry mandatory minimum sentences and Sandusky is certain to spend the rest of his life in prison.

The judge revoked Sandusky's bail and ordered him jailed. In court, Sandusky half-waved toward family as the sheriff led him away. Outside, he calmly walked to a sheriff's car with his hands cuffed in front of him.

The accuser known in court papers as Victim 6 broke down in tears upon hearing the verdicts in the courtroom. Afterward, a prosecutor embraced him and said, "Did I ever lie to you?"

The man, now 25, testified that Sandusky called himself the "tickle monster" in a shower assault. He declined to comment to a reporter afterward.

His mother said: "Nobody wins. We've all lost."

Almost immediately after the judge adjourned, loud cheers could be heard from a couple hundred people gathered outside the courthouse as word quickly spread that Sandusky had been convicted. The crowd included victim advocates and local residents with their kids. Many held up their smartphones to take pictures as people filtered out of the building.

As Sandusky was placed in the cruiser to be taken to jail, someone yelled at him to "rot in hell." Others hurled insults and he shook his head no in response.

Defense attorney Joe Amendola was interrupted by cheers from the crowd on courthouse steps when he said, "The sentence that Jerry will receive will be a life sentence."

Eight young men testified in a central Pennsylvania courtroom about a range of abuse, from kissing and massages to groping, oral sex and anal rape. For two other alleged victims, prosecutors relied on testimony from a university janitor and then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary, whose account of a sexual encounter between Sandusky and a boy of about 10 ultimately led to the Paterno's dismissal and the university president's ouster.

Sandusky did not take the stand in his own defense.

After the verdict was announced, defense attorney Karl Rominger said it was "a tough case" with a lot of charges and that an appeal was certain. He said the defense team "didn't exactly have a lot of time to prepare."

Amendola said: "The jury acted in good faith. The jury acted on the evidence presented to it. We had a good jury."

Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly thanked the accusers who testified, calling them "brave men."

She said she hoped the verdict "helps these victims heal ... and helps other victims of abuse to come forward."

She said: "One of the recurring themes in this case was, 'Who would believe a kid?' The answer is 'We here in Bellefonte, Pa., would believe a kid."

The ex-coach had repeatedly denied the allegations, and his defense suggested that his accusers had a financial motive to make up stories, years after the fact. His attorney also painted Sandusky as the victim of overzealous police investigators who coached the alleged victims into giving accusatory statements.

But jurors believed the testimony that, in the words of lead prosecutor Joseph McGettigan III, Sandusky was a "predatory pedophile."

One accuser testified that Sandusky molested him in the locker-room showers and in hotels while trying to ensure his silence with gifts and trips to bowl games. He also said Sandusky had sent him "creepy love letters."

Another spoke of forced oral sex and instances of rape in the basement of Sandusky's home, including abuse that left him bleeding. He said he once tried to scream for help, knowing that Sandusky's wife was upstairs, but figured the basement must be soundproof.

Another, a foster child, said Sandusky warned that he would never see his family again if he ever told anyone what happened.

And just hours after the case went to jurors, lawyers for one of Sandusky's six adopted children, Matt, said he had told authorities that his father abused him.

Matt Sandusky had been prepared to testify on behalf of prosecutors, the statement said. The lawyers said they arranged for Matt Sandusky to meet with law enforcement officials but did not explain why he didn't testify.

"This has been an extremely painful experience for Matt and he has asked us to convey his request that the media respect his privacy," the statement said. It didn't go into details about his allegations.

Defense witnesses, including Jerry Sandusky's wife, Dottie, described his philanthropic work with children over the years, and many spoke in positive terms about his reputation in the community. Prosecutors had portrayed those efforts as an effective means by which Sandusky could camouflage his molestation as he targeted boys who were the same age as participants in The Second Mile, a charity he founded in the 1970s for at-risk youth.

Sandusky's arrest in November led the Penn State trustees to fire Paterno as head coach, saying he exhibited a lack of leadership after fielding a report from McQueary. The scandal also led to the ouster of university president Graham Spanier, and criminal charges against two university administrators for failing to properly report suspected child abuse and perjury.

The two administrators, athletic director Tim Curley and now-retired vice president Gary Schultz, are fighting the allegations and await trial.

Sandusky had initially faced 52 counts of sex abuse. The judge dropped four counts during the trial, saying two were unproven, one was brought under a statute that didn't apply and another was duplicative.

Kylie And Kendall Jenner Take Us Shopping

'Keeping Up With the Kardashians' star name Blake Lively and big sis Kourtney as their fashion inspirations.

Kylie and Kendall Jenner
Photo:

Have you ever watched Kylie and Kendall Jenner on "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and wondered just what they look for when they go shopping? Well, you'll find the answer here.

MTV News got the chance to hang out with the reality show princesses and Seventeen magazine fashionistas on Robertson Boulevard in sunny Los Angeles, where they dished all about cool summer styles and what they wear when the weather gets boiling hot. They picked out some of their choice looks at L.A. staples Alice + Olivia and Kitson.

"Some of the big trends for summer? I love colored shorts and I think those are coming back, just bright things," Kendall shared. "I have so many bright-colored jeans now."

Kylie agreed about the color trend for this summer, adding that "color blocking, just a bunch of patterns and crazy stuff" top her favorite-looks list. "Jumpers are just, like, amazing for summer," she said. "So easy. You can throw it on, go to the mall, who knows?"

Meanwhile, Kendall weighed in on her other must-haves. "These shorts [are] so cool," she said. "The pattern, the American flag, and just how they're different [and] no one really has them. I think that's sick for summer." Another sick piece? "I love mullet dresses," she said of dresses with a high-low hemline. "I think they are so cute. They show off your legs."

Kylie, who chooses Blake Lively as her fashionista of choice, had a preppier pick for her summer go-to staple. "Also for the summer [are] collared shirts. You can get the craziest collared shirts and put them with simple jeans ... and it's so cute and classy, and it's such a great look."

Lively may be Kylie's favorite style icon, but Kendall kept her pick in the family. "My sister Kourtney, she's been wearing lots of bright colors 'cause she's so cute and little and pregnant," she raved about her big sister.

Healthy oils suppress Breast Cancer

(NaturalNews) Women that are on the Breast Cancer journey must be clear about certain dietary restrictions. There is the obvious list of "Foods to Avoid", such as sugar, processed foods, and hormone injected meats. However, there seems to be a lot of confusion about what types of oils are beneficial for Breast Cancer suppression and which ones should be avoided.

Let's start with the term HNE, which stands for the fatty acid derived toxin "4-hydroxy-trans-2 nonenal". It is a byproduct that is produced when polyunsaturated oils are heated at very high temperatures. The oils that are high in linoleic acid are often used in restaurants and in homes for frying or high heat cooking include:
Canola Oil, Soybean Oil, Sunflower Oil and Corn Oil.

Aside from the lipid peroxidation and the toxic effect that HNE has on the cell wall, the issue also lies with the imbalance in the increased consumption of these plant based oils.

A study conducted in 2002 at the Center for Genetics in Washington, DC, found that "Excessive amounts of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and a very high omega-6/omega-3 ratio, as is found in today's Western diets, promote the pathogenesis of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and inflammatory and autoimmune diseases."

The healthiest oils for Breast Cancer suppression are Omega 6's and the proper source of Omega 3's. The World Health Organization recommends a healthy ratio of Omega 6 and Omega 3 to be between 5:1 to 10:1. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute published a research paper about the effects of the improper ratio on Breast Cancer. They found that diets that were high in Omega 6 actually stimulated the growth and spread of Breast Cancer cells.

Healthy sources for Omega 3 oils would be flax seed, chia or hemp oils. The Budwig Protocol, which incorporates ground flax seed and flax seed oil in its healing regime, has had remarkable success for over 50 years in reversing and healing multiple types of cancer.

There have been numerous studies on the effects of the lignans in flax seed and the tumor suppression effect they have on Breast Cancer cells. For women that are choosing to take estrogen suppressing drugs like Tamoxifen, incorporating flax seed oil in their diets improves the inhibitory effect of Tamoxifen.

The best source of Omega 6 is purified and distilled wild caught fish oil. DHA and EPA in the fish oils have shown promising effects on stimulating Breast Cancer cell death resulting in tumor regression.

The choice of dietary oils cannot be over looked, if your ultimate goal is prevention and suppression of Breast Cancer. Be proactive with prevention by making informed dietary decisions based on research and scientific evidence.

Duolingo

A fascinating new project from Carnegie Mellon University, Duolingo?(free) helps you learn a new language by asking you to participate in translating the Web. Users vote on the best translation submitted by other users, and eventually, the translated Web pages can be published so that more speakers of other languages can read them. It relies almost exclusively on crowd-sourcing, which may leave many language learners wondering if it's any good. How much can you trust translations that random people on the Internet write? The answer is: more than you think.

Duolingo has tremendous features that work surprisingly well at getting you to practice a language, and expose you to interesting content and people, and?is actually fun and interesting. Among free language-learning tools, Duolingo is PCMag's Editors' Choice.?

The language selection of this young project is currently limited to Spanish, German, and English (for Spanish speakers), with French in beta. Italian and Chinese are reportedly coming soon, and you should be as excited as I am for them to arrive.

How Duolingo Works
To get access to Duolingo, you can sign up with an email address and password, or authenticate via Facebook or Twitter. The, just pick which languages you want to learn: Spanish, German, and/or French. You can opt into as many language learning programs as you want.

I started Duolingo with Spanish, a language I've studied in the past but never mastered and have been trying to improve more recently, and couldn't be happier with the results. The Web app is fun to use and gives you real Web content to practice reading and translating.

If you want to study more than one language, you can elect the second one after you create an account (although the option isn't easy to find; I'd rather it were simply an option in the settings).

Duolingo keeps track of your progress and participation as you learn. When you sign in, a home screen shows you a roadmap of what you'll learn. Units along the roadmap appear gray until they're unlocked, at which time they become colorful, and a small trophy icon turns gold when you've completed and mastered a unit.?

You can't jump ahead. Each unit is locked until you level-up to it, and if you think you're too advanced for the Basic sections, you have to prove your abilities by taking a test to opt out.?

Language-Learning Components
Each of the units that you can see on the roadmap contain both language-learning components as well as translation exercises (explained in the next section).?

The language-learning parts are solid and replicate some of the typical drills you'll find in more well-known language software, like our two Editors' Choices, Rosetta Stone TOTALe ($249 for Level 1, 4 stars) and Rocket Languages Premium ($99.95 for lifetime membership, 4.5 stars). For example, on one screen, Duolingo will introduce you to a new word, usually in context with other words that you've already learned, and provide the translation. On the next screen, you might be asked to choose which article fits with a word, such as the masculine el or feminine la in Spanish. Two or three screens later, you might be asked to translate the word you learned previously. Duolingo's language-learning tools work because they help you build knowledge logically and slowly.?

You might complete a few dozen screens of exercises?fill-in-the-blanks, typed translations, listen-and-repeats with voice recognition, and so forth?before reaching a completion screen. The progress markers Duolingo uses couldn't be clearer, and they do an excellent job of orienting you and guiding you through the program.

Crowd-Sourced Answers
After you've proved your language skills to some degree, Duolingo invites you to help translate the Web, and this is where the project becomes very cool. You get to choose which pages you want to try and translate?a few options appear on virtual cards with a topic name to give you a sense of what it might contain?and the options are all theoretically within your reach based on your progress so far.?

When you select a card, Duolingo only gives you small snippets to translate, not the whole page. And while some of these sentences don't make sense out of the context of the whole page, there's always a link at the top to see the original source. For example, when I tried to translate a headline that word-for-word read, "Buddha Tire" (as in automobile tires), I clicked the source to see a blog post with a picture of car tires piled into the shape of a sitting Buddha. Ah ha.

As you translate each bit of text, Duolingo checks your writing against other submitted results, which you can see and rate. The site also compares your answer against the highest rated translation to give you a score (1 to 100). A good match doesn't have to be word-for-word the same, either, another reason Duolingo is a highly intelligent system.?

You earn points throughout for both completing the learning modules and translating text successfully. All of Duolingo's parts are tightly knitted together in this way.

The translations I encountered were still very challenging, but in a good way. I liked trying to read real writing, rather than sentences that are designed based on only the words and verb tenses I know. Language-learning software in general faces this problem, but at least with Duolingo, you're practicing with real content.?

How to Use Duolingo to Learn a Language
Duolingo is the only crowd-sourced language-learning service to get it right. It is by far one of the most exciting educational concepts I've seen. With Spanish, German, and English for speakers of Spanish already rolling strongly, I'm eagerly awaiting French to come out of beta, and for other languages to fill out the roster.?

Duolingo is undoubtedly one of the best free tools for practicing a new language?but not necessarily learning a new one from scratch. For that, it may be slightly too challenging for a lot of learners. To fully learn a new language, I do recommend picking up dedicated software that has been tested rigorously, like either of our two Editors' Choices?Rocket Language , Rosetta Stone?or even audio CDs from Pimsleur ($119, 3.5 stars). Pair any of those programs with Duolingo for practicing, and you're sure to learn a lot, fast.
