I know, I know, your first question is ?what the f$!* is a snallygaster?? Well, my uncultured-in-the-ways-of-local-cryptozoology friend, a snallygaster, according to Wikipedia, is a ?mythical dragon-like beast said to inhabit the Blue Ridge Mountains near Braddock Heights, Maryland.? Well, that?s settled.
Wait, no, it?s not settled. Here?s more on this beast, again from Wikipedia:
The Snallygaster was described as half-reptile, half-bird with a metallic beak lined with razor-sharp teeth, occasionally with octopus-like tentacles. It swoops silently from the sky to pick up and carry off its victims. The earliest stories claim that this monster sucked the blood of its victims. Seven-pointed stars, which reputedly kept the Snallygaster at bay, can still be seen painted on local barns.
So what do you think of when you hear about feathered bloodsucking octopus birds? Well, personally I think about Oktoberbest, and so, too, apparently, does Neighborhood Restaurant Group.
NRG?s ?Snallygaster, a Beer Festival to Benefit Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture? will take place on October 13 from 1-5pm at The Yards Park (located at 3rd and Water St. SE).
The festival will feature ?more than 100 different ales and lagers all hand-picked by acclaimed beer director Greg Engert.?
Here?s more from the release:
Snallygaster will be a celebration of classic Oktoberfest lagers, German style and German-inspired beers, exciting autumn seasonals, plus a bevy of coveted international finds, and unheard of rarities. Look for one-off beers brewed specifically for the event, a huge collection of cask ales, assorted barrel-aged brews, and even a host of Franconian gravity-poured, rubber-clad kegs hardly ever tasted stateside.
D.C.?s finest food vendors & chefs will be on hand to help soak up the suds, while live music, DJ?s, recreational and family-friendly activities will keep attendees well entertained. To cap it off, the whole event is set with the backdrop of D.C.?s beautifully redesigned Yards Park waterfront with landscaped green spaces, a boardwalk, and water features.
So how do you get into this shindig? Guests will need to pay $5 to enter the festival, and all of these gate fees will go straight to the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture. Drink and food tickets will be sold separately. Much like Rustico?s Oktoberfest, $1=1 ticket, and beers will range anywhere from 5-10 tickets, food will operate on a similar system.
Here?s the first 25 beers (of 100) that will be poured at the festival:
