Junior golf camps held at Legends Golf Course

BEAUFORT, S.C. - "Golf is a life-long sport that teaches children about sportsmanship, honor, honesty and integrity,? said Alex Holroyde, Junior Golf Camp coach. ?To teach children golf at an early age builds a foundation of characteristics that can be carried over to another sport and even life.?

The 2013 Junior Golf Camps were held aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island at The Legends Golf Course from June 10 ? July 19.

The camps, which ran a week at a time, introduced children, ages six to 17, to golf through beginner camps, intermediate and advanced camps which included lunch, prizes, instructional books and teaching aides, golf techniques, scoring, etiquette, strategies and more.

Depending on the level, camps focused on different aspects of golf.

?Golf is a life-long sport that teaches children about sportsmanship, honor, honesty and integrity,? said Alex Holroyde, Junior Golf Camp coach. ?To teach children golf at an early age builds a foundation of characteristics that can be carried over to another sport and even life.?

Participants in the camp received golf instruction at the course?s putting green, practice range and course. Various miniature games were incorporated into the training to provide a fun and entertaining environment.

?The golf coaches here are really nice and playing golf is fun because you get to make new friends who like to play golf too,? said nine-year-old Aidan Wiegel, a participant in the beginner golf camp and son of Lt. Col. Wade Wiegel, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122 commanding officer.

The course will be hosting a Parent-Child Tournament July 20 at 2 p.m. An entry fee of $40 per team includes greens and cart fees. A Ladies League is also held at the course every Wednesday.

?Like any other sport, golf exercises both the mind and body, and can be enjoyed by anyone no matter how old they are,? said Holroyde, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Daily fees for service members are $17 for 18 holes and $10 for 9 holes, golf cart rentals not included. Children ages six to 17 cost $10 for 18 holes and $6 for 9 holes. The course also offers and driving range, chipping range and putting area.
