1994 called?they want their wallpaper back;) Our house was a beauty in 1994, the year we graduated from high school.
Fact: Kids like to rip wallpaper. For about 17 minutes.
Then you must set up drum sets out of whatever you can.
Or ladders and steps tools?someone remind me to set out a whole bunch of ladders and steps tools next winter.
Fact: Willa Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was on when we painted the dining room. I feel like this room has a melted chocolate coating. ?This is our ?pub? and it?s for games, darts, and puzzles. Absolutely no formal eating allowed in there. Ever. Especially when we ever figure out a table. Next on the to do list?hire a hot tile guy.
John has a great way of including the kids in all home improvement projects. He teaches them all about how things go together and come apart, and gives them jobs to feel important. He teaches them about tools and sayings like ?measure twice, cut once??.Mommy?s saying is more like ?eyeball it and make it work.?
When they lose interest, decorate boxes (sneak in some letters and numbers), make painter?s tape car tracks, or measure stuff until the hot tile guy needs his tape measure back.
Home improvement is a teachable moment?but, a difficult one because you just want to get the job done. Try to pause and include your kids just a little. You?d be surprised at the learning you can construct as you construct.?Turns out tiling 3 rooms takes A LOT of number writing, which was a perfect job for the kids. My son did the lower numbers and the girls did the higher numbers. Tiling a room is a real life time to talk area, perimeter, multiplication, and how home improvement projects are an invitation to eat junk food for a few days.
Wah-lah. The Pub.
Our ?formal dinnerware??ahem?game and puzzle cabinet. Something I love about antiques is thinking about other homes it was in or what was inside. Chances are this is the first Rubik?s Cube and robot arm for this 100 year old hutch. FYI: Dixit is our newest and most played game in the hutch.?
Whether you?re picking the perfect color (greens are tricky) or measuring for curtains, try to involve your kids a little. They can see how important your project is to you, so their interest level is higher. If you?re lucky, you can find ways for them to ?help? that teaches, and also allows you to finish the job.
Sometimes, the teachable moment is for the parents: Procrastinating the home improvement can work to your sanity advantage. This hole is from a small bannister/railing we removed. Directly below is the basement playroom. Our kids spent hours passing notes on strings, yelling, and listening while John and I plopped on the couch.
Happy Home Improvement! Shelisa
