Goodwill Administrative staff is currently looking for volunteers to help with their free income tax service. Goodwill's Lufkin location has been a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program since 2007. The VITA program is absolutely free and anyone can attend the four-to-five classes to become certified in teaching people how to do their taxes.
"Over the past three years we have had anywhere from twenty to twenty-five volunteers, which gives them two-to-three hours on a certain day so that everybody doesn't have to be here every day to do the taxes. All they really need to have is the willingness to help serve others," said Phyllis Handsaker, the finance director for Goodwill Industries.
VITA sites were created so the U.S. Internal Revenue Service could link up with nonprofit's and help people who were struggling to get their income taxes done. Goodwill's income tax service does simple tax returns, W-2 forms, and 1099s.
