DEERFIELD ? Despite persistent rain Saturday, more than 400 residents from Deerfield, Bannockburn and Riverwoods came out to Deerfield?s Sachs Recreation Center for the Chamber of Commerce?s ninth annual Healthy Lifestyle Expo, which worked to promote healthy services for all ages.

?We founded the Expo with the Patty Turner Center nine years ago, originally to provide people with flu shots,? explained Victoria Street, the Chamber of Commerce?s executive director. ?Ten years ago, flu shots were not available at every single Walgreen?s or CVS like they are now ? you had to go to your doctor to get them.?

Since flu and pneumonia shots are now widely available, Street said that organizers decided to turn the expo into an event that promoted all facets of a healthy lifestyle for the entire family.

Sponsored by Whitehall of Deerfield Healthcare Center, 30 area exhibitors were set up around center?s gym to offer a variety of health and fitness information. Activities also were offered, including fitness demonstrations, healthy cooking demos, free samples of healthy snacks, and kids? activities.

Hearing, glaucoma, blood pressure, blood glucose and body fat screenings also were offered for free to all in attendance. Flu shots and pneumonia vaccinations were offered at no cost to those with Medicare.

Chuck Dushman, director of new business and innovation at Lake Forest-based Omron Healthcare Offices, educated people about Omron?s GOhear hearing aids. He explained that while hearing aids typically cost between $4,000 and $6,000, GOhear hearing aids cost $1,500 per pair.

?Eighty-six percent of people with hearing loss do not have hearing aids because they are too expensive,? Dushman said. ?Untreated hearing loss is an epidemic that needs to be addressed, and Omron is addressing that by making hearing aids more accessible and more affordable.?

Using two apple halves as a visual, Juice Plus+ Representative and Wellness Consultant Caryl Desserich promoted the company?s non-vitamin Juice Plus+ capsule. The apples represented the difference between a body that had taken the capsule and a body that had not.

Desserich showed that the first body, or apple half, which looked fresh on the inside after taking Juice Plus+ for a few weeks. The other looked brown after maintaining a nutrition-lacking diet.

?This is not a vitamin, though,? Desserich said, adding that the product is a healthier food-based supplement.

Loren Kogan, vice president of development at Home Care Assistance, detailed the caregiver services provided by her Kenilworth-based company.

?We provide older adults with quality care so that they can live happier, healthier lives at home,? Kogan said.

Kogan also raffled off a basket filled with nutritious food items, including nuts, carrots, flaxseeds, blueberries and dark chocolate.

Many children flocked to the basketball hoop, set up and sponsored by Chicago Sky ? a Women?s National Basketball Association team based in Rosemont. Children participated in competitive shooting contests against friends and siblings, and greeted the jet-pack-wearing Chicago Sky Guy mascot.

Deerfield resident Bob Seward stopped by to let his young daughter shoot some hoops after picking her up from her swimming lessons at the center. Seward, who had never been to the expo before, said he was surprised to learn that the expo offered flu shots.

Sandy David, of Palatine, attended the expo for the first time with Deerfield resident Bertha Kass, who had been to the Chamber event in previous years. Both agreed that this year?s event was full of useful health information, intelligent personnel and proactive products.

?Everything they display is great,? Kass said. ?It?s all very interesting, especially at my age.?

?It?s all very informative,? David added.
