The highly anticipated Rasmussen Fitness and Sports Center is now open for all faculty, staff, and students to use.

The Rev. Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., president of Creighton University, led the dedication of the new building located on 17th street on Oct. 23 from 3:30-5 p.m. The Creighton Pep Band and Scotty and the Jay Birds provided the entertainment for the dedication.

The building is named in honor of Bruce Rasmussen, the current director of Creighton athletics. He has been the athletic director for the past 18 years.

?I believe buildings should be named for people after they are no longer at Creighton,? Rasmussen said. ?However, the lead donor was insistent [that the building be named in my honor] and he is persuasive. I am humbled and honored and know that there are great responsibilities as a result,?

The total cost of the center was $ 11.9 million, which was received entirely in donations from a number of different donors.

?The funding of this facility came from people who were not giving to any other Creighton project ? that is, no money was taken from any other project to do this facility,? Rasmussen said.

The new center houses a multipurpose field house with synthetic turf intended for the intramural sports teams and Creighton athletic teams to use.

Rasmussen believes that this new facility will be of great benefit for these groups because ?over three-fourths of our students are involved with intramurals and campus recreation, and yet in the winter months especially, we do not have adequate facilities. Our men?s and women?s soccer teams and our baseball and softball teams are currently using other facilities in Omaha during the winter months.?

The building also has a suspended two- lane track and a fitness level with cardio, circuit training and free-weight equipment.

?I think the community needs to know this [facility] is for students that aren?t part of organized athletics first. The program for the?design of the facility always kept organized athletics in mind, but the priority was given to recreation and club sports,? Lennis Pederson, the associate vice president and the director of Facilities Management, said.

The FitNest, which was formerly located in the Harper Center, was closed Oct. 12. The Rasmussen Fitness and Sports Center will replace the FitNest as the fitness center on the eastern side of campus. The hours of the Rasmussen Center will be the same as the FitNest, according to Steve Brace, the assistant Creighton athletic director.
