KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A member of a U.S.-backed Afghan village police force killed nine of his fellow officers as they slept Friday in a volatile eastern area, officials said. The Taliban claimed responsibility.

The gunman opened fire with his assault rifle after waking up at 3 a.m. ostensibly to take over guard duty at a small command post for the Afghan Local Police in Paktika province, killing everybody inside, including the post's commander, according to officials. He then took their weapons, piled them in a pickup truck and sped away.

It was the latest in a growing number of attacks by Afghan security forces against their own people or against international troops in Afghanistan in recent years, some the result of arguments and others by insurgent infiltrators.

Provincial police chief Dawlat Khan Zadran said the incident took place in Yayakhil town of Yayakhil district.

Bowal Khan, chief of Yayakhil district, identified the gunman as Asadullah and said he goes by one name, as do many Afghans.

Khan said his own brother was among those killed, along with the commander of the post, identified as Mohammad Ramazan, and two of the commander's sons.

The motive for the killing was not known, but police in the area blamed the Taliban for the attack. Paktika is a stronghold of the Haqqani network, a Pakistani-based group with ties to the Taliban and al-Qaida. Although they mostly attack U.S.-led coalition forces, they have often carried out assaults and bombings against the Afghan army and police.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack and said the shooter was a member of the insurgent group. He added in a text message that he took the dead police officers weapons and handed them over to the Taliban.

"This man is a coward. What he did is part of the Taliban conspiracy," Khan said.

Khan and Zadran said the killer's two brothers were being held for questioning.

The increasing number of attacks by Afghan police and soldiers has cast doubt on the readiness of Afghan security forces to take over their own security as the U.S.-led international coalition prepares to end its combat mission by the end of 2014.

On Monday, an American soldier was shot and killed by a member of the Afghan Local Police, at a checkpoint in Paktika.

Two British soldiers also were killed by an Afghan soldier in front of the main gate of a joint civilian-military base in southern Afghanistan that day.

So far this year, 16 NATO service members have been shot and killed by Afghan soldiers and policemen or militants disguised in their uniforms, according to an Associated Press tally. That equals 18 percent of the 84 foreign troops killed this year in Afghanistan. Of the approximately 80 NATO service members killed since 2007 by Afghan security forces, more than 75 percent were in the past two years.

There also have been recent examples of Afghans killing their own comrades.

The Afghan Local Police, or ALP, provide security in villages and remote areas that cannot be staffed by the Afghan army and police.

U.S. special forces have been training the village-level fighting forces in hopes of countering the Taliban insurgency ? a concept similar to the one that turned the tide of the Iraq war. The ALP, however, is commanded and run by the Afghan government and police.

The initiative has stirred worries it will legitimize existing private militias or create new ones. Warlord-led militias ravaged Afghanistan in the 1990s, opening the way for the Taliban takeover.

But Taliban infiltration of the ALP is considered difficult as all their members are recruited locally and vetted by village elders before joining. They usually guard the village or area where they are recruited and know each other.

Another ALP member was accused of involvement in the killing of nine members of his unit in March in southern Uruzgan province. They also were shot and killed while asleep at their post in the village of Oshi in the province's Charchino district. It remains unclear if he killed them or allowed a killer into the post, but he was never apprehended.

In other violence Friday, a motorcycle bomb parked by the side of a road exploded, killing an Afghan police officer and wounding another in Sangin district of southwest Helmand province, police said. They added that another police officer was shot and killed late Thursday outside his house in the capital of Helmand.

NATO also said Friday that two of its service members were killed in southern Afghanistan ? one died in a roadside bomb explosion on Friday and the other one in an insurgent attack on Thursday. NATO did not disclose any other details.

So far this year, 88 international troops have been killed in Afghanistan.

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? The last of the little guys gave North Carolina a massive scare.

Harrison Barnes scored five of his 12 points in overtime and the top-seeded Tar Heels escaped a huge upset with a 73-65 victory over No. 13 seed Ohio on Friday night in the Midwest Regional semifinals.

Ohio, trying to become the first team seeded 13th or worse to make the regional finals since the NCAA tournament expanded in 1985, had a chance to convert a three-point play that would have given the Bobcats the lead with 25 seconds left in regulation. Walter Offutt missed from the line, however, and Ohio went 0 for 6 from the field in the first overtime of this year's tournament.

"One free throw away," Offutt said. "As a leader on this team, I take responsibility that I've got to hit that free throw. ... It just feels terrible to kind of let my team down in that sort of way."

Tyler Zeller finished with 20 points and a career-high 22 rebounds for North Carolina, which sorely missed injured point guard Kendall Marshall. The Tar Heels had three players with double-doubles for the first time in an NCAA tournament game: Reggie Bullock had 17 points and 10 boards, and John Henson had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman guard Stilman White was an impressive fill-in for Marshall, dishing out six assists without a single turnover and playing 32 minutes ? almost three times his previous high.

"We feel like we got away with one," Zeller said. "Ohio played the better game, they hit a lot of shots. I think we just were able to make a lot of plays at the end that made us capable of pulling it out."

Offutt led the Bobcats (29-8) with 26 points, including 18 from 3-point range, and Nick Kellogg added 14. But D.J. Cooper, who averaged 20 points in Ohio's first two tournament games, finished with just 10 on 3-of-20 shooting.

"I've been getting those same shots all tournament," Cooper said. "I've been making them, and tonight I just didn't get the job done."

North Carolina (32-5), which has won 11 straight in the regional semifinals, plays Kansas on Sunday afternoon for a trip to the Final Four. The Jayhawks beat North Carolina State 60-57.

"It means a heck of a lot," coach Roy Williams said moments after his team escaped, "but we've got to play better than we did today."

That's for sure ? especially since the Tar Heels are unlikely to have Marshall, perhaps their most irreplaceable player and the steadying hand behind their fast-paced attack. The left-handed guard broke his right wrist Sunday when he was fouled on a drive against Creighton. He had surgery Monday to put a screw in the wrist and got his cast off Wednesday.

Though Marshall said the wrist is improving, he didn't even dress Friday night, sitting on the bench in a suit.

"He still hasn't done anything," Williams said when asked about the prospects of Marshall returning Sunday. "But North Carolina's going to play on Sunday. We're happy about that."

Barnes was dismal, flirting with a season low in scoring as he went 3 for 16 while missing from inside, outside and everywhere in between. But his teammates weren't much better, turning the ball over a season-high 24 times and shooting just 40 percent, six percentage points below their average.

Worse, they could never get a handle on the smaller, quicker Bobcats.

"They don't play like a 13 seed," Henson said. "It was a great game."

After trailing by as much as 15 in the first half, Ohio got hot from long range and gave the Tar Heels almost more than they could handle. Ohio, a 10?-point underdog, was 8 of 13 from 3-point range in the second half, with Offutt doing most of the damage. He made a 3-pointer to start a 14-5 run and hit two more during the stretch, which pulled the Bobcats to 42-41 with 10:23 to play.

After Zeller's layup and a dunk by James Michael McAdoo, Cooper hit his only 3 of the game. Kellogg came right back with another to give Ohio its first lead, 47-46, with 8:28 to play, and the Ohio faithful ? plus all the new fans the Bobcats picked up ? went into a frenzy.

The teams traded leads, neither able to put the other away. When Barnes missed badly on a 3 with 1:17 to play, the crowd taunted him with chants of "Air-ball! Air-ball!" Williams could be heard yelling "One stop!" at his team, and the Tar Heels got it when Cooper missed a jumper at the other end.

Bullock then drilled a 3 to give North Carolina a 63-61 lead with 39 seconds left, but Offutt ? who else? ? scored on an off-balance drive and drew a foul from White. Offutt's foul shot was way left, the only free throw the Bobcats missed in eight attempts, and Zeller grabbed the rebound.

"It's just like him to take responsibility for the loss because that's who he is," Bobcats coach John Groce said of his senior, a transfer from Ohio State by way of Wright State. "But the reality of it is, that doesn't fall on him. There's so many plays during the game that make up the game in a 45-minute game, and if anybody deserved to make that free throw, it's him. It just didn't go in."

NATO protesters appeal to Chicago officials over parade route

(Crain's) ? Activists appealed Chicago's denial of a permit for a protest march from Daley Plaza to the site of the NATO summit on May 20 after rejecting a new route proposed by city officials today.

Andy Thayer, an organizer with the Coalition Against the NATO/G8 War & Poverty Agenda (CANG8), said the group's request was identical to a route already approved by the city for May 19.

That parade permit was approved when the G-8 summit also was to meet in Chicago. But the White House moved the G-8 to Camp David, leaving protesters with permits for a day when no meetings will be held.

A hearing on CANG8's appeal is scheduled for next Tuesday at 10 am before the city's Department of Administrative Hearings, he said.

CANG8 wants marchers to assemble at Daley Plaza, in the heart of the Loop, then march down State Street because it's more convenient and more in the public eye. The city wanted the assembly to take place at the Petrillo Music Shell in the middle of Grant Park, then march south along Columbus Drive and Michigan Avenue, avoiding the Loop entirely.

Mr. Thayer said an alternate route proposed today by the city would go through part of the Loop, making the march longer and more circuitous. It would have taken marchers from Grant Park north to Monroe Street, then west to Michigan Avenue, north to Madison Street and over to State Street before heading south toward McCormick Place.

"The city is trying to accommodate our desire for an audience for our First Amendment message," Mr. Thayer acknowledged, but "it's adding extra mileage to a march route that's already pretty long. It's just not practical."

Mr. Thayer said the city claims the route his group wants won't work on the 20th because it goes through the central downtown area and there won't be enough on-duty police officers to handle the traffic congestion. He said the city's addition of the phrase "on duty" to the criteria set forth in the parade ordinance, after the original permit was granted, gives the city too much leeway to deny a permit.

In its March 15 denial of the permit request for May 20, the city said that a march on that date would exacerbate "significant traffic impediments" that will be created by motorcades for about 5,000 NATO delegates and staff, and about 50 heads of state.

"Mr. Thayer requested a date change for his permit to Sunday May 20th, and for the past week the city has been working with him to accommodate his revised application," a spokesman for the city law department said in a statement. "The city is committed to allowing his organization to express their 1st Amendment rights while balancing it with our obligation to keep the participants safe as they express their rights and to keep the city as a whole safe. ?Unfortunately, we were unable to reach an agreement and Mr. Thayer will not accept the alternate route proposed by the city."

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Jamie Moyer pitched four perfect innings and made a case to join the Rockies' rotation by helping Colorado to a 7-0 win over a split squad of San Francisco Giants on Thursday night.

The 49-year-old lefty was out of the majors last season while recovering from a torn elbow ligament. He struck out four and only Angel Pagan made solid contact, lining out to center field to start the game.

Former Twins outfielder Michael Cuddyer hit his first homer with the Rockies, a long two-run shot in the third to make it 4-0.

Pablo Sandoval had the Giants' only hit -- a one-out double in the seventh, and the Giants made four errors.

Colorado had nine hits, including three by Wilin Rosario, who raised his spring average to. 444 in his bid to win the backup catcher's spot.
